As a Necromancer, I feel this is going to be a fun topic. First I want to dive into what exactly Necromancy and Spirit Work is, to make sure we are all on the same page. Before doing so, I would like to mention and emphasize that there are dangers to both Spirit Work and Necromancy, which is why it is important to protect yourself (which is going to be another post). Before diving into how to protect ourselves, lets see what is actually meant of Spirit Work and Necromancy.
Spirit Work is an umbrella term for any practice working with spirits. This can be as simple as leaving an offering for your spirit guides, angels, or as complex as Astral Travel. With spirit work, you are working side-by-side with those who are on the other side- whether they were originally from this realm or not. It is quite common to confuse spirit work with Spirit Companionship, which is the act of having spirits around as friends or even a spirit family. While spirit companionship can be under the umbrella of spirit work, they are not synonyms.
Necromancy is the practice of communicating with the dead to predict the future or to help influence something in your life. This can be done with a spirit board, cards, pendulum, or any other divination method plus more. Of course, predicting the future with the help of spirits does not necessarily mean “predict the future” but can more-so mean to offer advice about what they see is about to happen. Of course, the message would be depending on the spirit you are working with. Spirits can be biased, optimistic, pessimistic, and more. Also, because you are working with spirits, it is important to know how to stay safe while doing so. The last thing you want is to be tricked by a spirit you thought was benevolent who may not have the best intentions for you.
Necromancy is not reanimating the dead, it is not “evil magic”, nor is it something you mess around with. Necromancy is not inherently evil, but anyone can use anything with bad intentions. It is important that when you work with spirits, for necromancy, companionship, or anything, you are safe and keep a guard up. The spirits will not be offended if you are skeptical of their intentions. If they are, you probably should be.
Necromancy is under the umbrella of Spirit Work, but spirit work is not necromancy. This is because it is possible to work with spirits and not ask them to “do your bidding”. It is possible to leave offerings, say a prayer, or receive messages or signs from spirit guides, angels, loved ones, and have it not be necromancy. Of course, before stepping into any sort of spirit work, it is so important you do your research. Not only does it give you more of an idea as to what you are getting yourself into, but can help make the experience much more enjoyable.
This month, say thanks to your guides, guardian angels, ancestors, and so on. Remember, respect the dead and they will respect you.
